Miles vs Feet: When to Use Each Unit

Both miles and feet are widely used imperial units of length in the United States and the United Kingdom. However, their applications differ vastly depending on the scale and context of what is being measured.
Understanding which unit is appropriate makes your communications clearer, your reports more professional, and your mathematical scaling much more intuitive.
When to Express Distance in Miles (mi)
Miles are used to represent long, macroscopic distances where expressing quantities in thousands of feet would result in large, difficult-to-read numbers.
- Road Travel and Navigation: Distances between cities, speed limits (miles per hour), and commuter routes are always expressed in miles. For example, "The commute from New York to Philadelphia is 95 miles," rather than "501,600 feet."
- Geography and Mapping: Sizing of countries, lengths of rivers, and boundary borders are measured in miles.
- Aeronautical & Long-Distance Racing: Flight plans and long athletic events (marathons, ultra-marathons) are scoped in miles.
When to Express Length in Feet (ft)
Feet are used for smaller, human-scale measurements where accuracy on a smaller scale is critical.
- Architecture & Construction: Heights of buildings, sizing of rooms, and depths of foundations are measured in feet. In construction blueprints, feet and inches are standard.
- Aviation Altitudes: Interestingly, while aircraft speed and flight routes are measured in knots or miles, flight altitude is strictly measured in feet above sea level (e.g., cruising at 35,000 feet).
- Athletic Fields: Dimensions of standard athletic spaces (football fields, soccer pitches, swimming pools) are typically defined in feet or yards.
- Topography: Elevations of mountains or depths of craters are expressed in feet (e.g., "Mount Whitney is 14,505 feet tall").
Making the Switch
If your project bridges both scales—for instance, measuring a large acreage of land that requires both parcel boundary lengths (in feet) and total road accessibility (in miles)—you will need to translate back and forth frequently.
